Walk-A-Thon FAQ’s
When is WAT?
October 11, 2023 and it lasts ALL DAY. PK-1st grade comes out at 8am and 2nd-5th comes out at 8:30am. PK and Kinder typically head back inside around lunchtime to rest.
What do the students do during WAT?
Students walk laps with friends, family and teachers, dance to the music, use their tickets to participate in activities, etc. There are staging areas set up for each grade level so students have a landing spot when they need a break or want to check in with teachers. Please note, children will be walking or running, no bikes or scooters allowed.
Can I come to WAT?
Yes! Families are welcome to join their child walking and playing games. Spend the day or just a few minutes! WAT also needs lots of volunteers to be successful, so spend some time with your child AND spend some time volunteering if you can!
How do I volunteer?
Click the Volunteer link on the WAT tab of our PTO website and it will direct you to our Sign-Up Genius for the event. There are all kinds of opportunities and time slots available! The district does ask that you complete a volunteer background check prior to volunteering at any campus. The link to the volunteer background check can be found on the Volunteers tab of this website! On the day of WAT, check in at the Volunteer tent 5 minutes before your scheduled time slot and we will direct you to your spot!
How is money raised and what does it go towards?
WAT is the only large fundraiser Curington PTO does during the school year. Because of that, we have BIG fundraising goals! The money raised from this event helps fund CAMP (Computer, Art, Music, PE) programs, campus activities students enjoy during the school year, teacher appreciation events, reading programs, teacher grants, and enhancements throughout our campus. We use Sponsorships, Pledges, Ticket Sales, and Silent Auction proceeds to raise the money for your students and teachers!
Speaking of Sponsorships, what does it mean to be a Classroom Sponsor?
We try to have each of our classrooms “Sponsored” throughout the year. For $100, you can sponsor a classroom. Your name, your family’s name, or your business name/logo will be featured on signage outside that classroom door for the entire school year. Your student will feel tremendous pride and support every time they come through their classroom door and see that class sponsor sign!
What is this “Pledge” thing?
Walk a Thon is a 23 year tradition at Curington where students walk as many laps as possible and ask their family and friends to support their school by pledging a certain dollar amount per lap OR just donating a flat dollar amount. We collect these pledges through an online platform called RallyUp. It is incredibly user friendly and there are instructions on our PTO website under the WAT tab. When students complete their laps, we enter their totals in RallyUp. There are awards for students who complete the most laps in the school and in their class!
How many laps do students normally complete?
It all depends on the child! Some kids LOVE the competition and prizes so they complete upwards of 60-80 laps during the day! Our younger PK and Kinder students don’t have as long to walk and have tinier legs so they are likely to complete between 10-15.
What is different about laps this year?
In an effort to promote walking and earning those pledges, this year the students will be earning different rewards as they complete laps! These will be easily marked so they will be able to make goals for themselves. For example, at Lap 4 you might earn a food prize and at lap 8 you could earn a small toy, and so on. The prizes get better and better the higher you go in laps! We do have different lap goals for little kids and big kids so everyone can achieve their goals!
Silent Auction/Class Baskets
Each class is assigned a “theme” and asked to donate small items to go towards a class basket that will be auctioned off during WAT. These class baskets raised a ton of money last year and we are excited to see how creative you guys are again this year! Room Parents will inform their respective class of their theme in September. Parents! Come by the gym when you are at WAT and bid on these amazing items! All proceeds go toward helping our school!
Tickets!
Tickets are sold online through our PTO website under the WAT tab and cost $1 each. Most activities at WAT cost 1-2 tickets and most foods are 2 - 5 tickets. They will have tons of fun trying all of the different activities in between walking laps! We will have the option for cash ticket sales prior to WAT . Tickets come in the form of a bracelet so students don’t lose track of them! Students will receive their ticket bracelet(s) on the morning of WAT from their teachers. You may also purchase Angel Tickets for students in need. We will also sell additional tickets on the day of WAT, but we highly recommend pre-purchasing online to avoid long lines at the ticket booth the day of WAT!
Food!
Tickets can be used to buy Chick-fil-A, pizza, nachos, popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy, etc. No advance purchase of food necessary this year! We will have multiple food booths set up at WAT for students and their families to enjoy. If students prefer to eat a sack lunch from the cafeteria or bring one from home, they are more than welcome to do that as well! We will also have water stations set up around the track.
What should my child wear?
Students all receive a FREE Walk A Thon t-shirt that they all wear for the event (they receive these from their teacher the morning of WAT). Students need to be in comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. If it’s warm, sunscreen and a hat! If it’s cool, we recommend they wear a long sleeve shirt UNDER their WAT shirt along with some gloves!
What if it rains or is below freezing?
We will try to adjust our activities to keep it the same day. If the weather refuses to cooperate, we will move WAT to November 1st!

¿Cuándo es la caminata?
El 11 de Octubre del 2023 y dura TODO EL DIA. Prescolar y 1er grado salen a las 8am y 2o a 5o salen a las 8:30am. Prescolar y 1er grado generalmente entran alrededor de la hora de la comida para descansar.
¿Qué hacen los estudiantes durante la Caminata?
Los estudiantes caminan vueltas con amigos, familia y maestros; bailan, usan sus boletos para participar en actividades, etc. Hay áreas designadas para cada grado para que los estudiantes tengan un lugar para descansar o si necesitan a un maestro. Los niños estarán caminando o corriendo; las bicicletas o patinetas no están permitidas.
¿Puedo ir a la Caminata?
Si! Las familias son bienvenidas a caminar con sus hijos y jugar juegos. Pueden venir todo el día o unos minutos. La Caminata también necesita muchos voluntarios para ser exitoso, así que pasa tiempo con tu hijo y ayuda si puedes!
¿Cómo puedo ayudar?
Haz click en el link de la Caminata (WAT) en la página de la Asociaciones de Padres de Familia que te dirigirá a un registro de SignUp Genius para el evento. Hay una variedad de oportunidades y horarios disponibles! El distrito pide que todos los voluntarios completen una verificación de antecedentes en cualquiera de las escuelas.

El día de la caminata, regístrate en el puesto de Voluntarios 5 minutos antes del tiempo programado y te diremos a tu lugar asignado.
¿Cómo se recauda el dinero y para que se utiliza?
La Caminata es el único evento del año de la Asociación de Padres de Familia (PTO) para recaudar fondos. Por esa razón, tenemos GRANDES metas para la recaudación de fondos. El dinero recaudado en éste evento ayudará a los programas CAMP (Computación, Arte, Música, Educación Física), actividades que los estudiantes disfrutan durante el año escolar, eventos de apreciación de maestros, programas de lectura, subsidios para maestros y mejoras a las instalaciones. Utilizamos el dinero recaudado por medio de patrocinios, promesas, ventas de boletos y subasta silenciosa para nuestros estudiantes y maestros!
¿Hablando de patrocinio, qué es un patrocinador de salón?
Tratamos de tener cada uno de nuestros salones “patrocinados“ durante el año. Por $100, puedes patrocinar un salón. Tu nombre, el apellido de tu familia o el nombre o logo de tu negocio aparecerán en el letrero afuera de ése salón durante el año escolar. Tu estudiante va a sentir mucho orgullo y apoyo cada vez que entre al salón y vea el letrero de patrocinio en el salón!
¿Qué son las “Promesas“?
La Caminata es una tradición de 23 años en Curington donde los estudiantes caminan tantas vueltas como puedan y piden a miembros de la familia y amigos que apoyen a su escuela prometiendo cierta cantidad de dólares por vuelta o una cantidad fija. Las promesas se recolectan por medio de una plataforma digital llamada RallyUp. Es muy fácil de usar y hay instrucciones en la página de la Asociación de Padres de Familia (PTO) en la pestaña de la Caminata (WAT). Cuando los estudiantes terminan sus vueltas, añadimos el total en RallyUp. Hay premios para los estudiantes que completan más vueltas en la escuela y en su salón!
¿Cuántas vueltas terminan los estudiantes en general?
Todo depende de cada niño. A algunos niños les encanta la competencia y los premios así que terminan entre 60 y 80 vueltas durante el día. Los pequeños de prescolar y Kinder no tienen tanto tiempo para caminar y generalmente completan entre 10 y 15.
¿Qué es diferente de las vueltas éste año?
Para promover que los estudiantes caminen y se ganen las promesas, éste año ganarán diferentes premios al completar vueltas! Va a ser fácil marcar ésto así que podrán poner metas para sí mismos. Por ejemplo, a la 4a vuelta ganarán un premio de comida; en la 8a podrán ganar un pequeño juguete, etc. Los premios serán más grandes mientras más vueltas completen. Los niños más pequeños tendrán metas diferentes que los grandes para que todos puedan cumplir sus metas.
Subasta Silenciosa / Canastas de Salón
A cada salón se le asignará un tema para la canasta de regalo y se pedirá que los padres donen pequeños artículos. Más información vendrá en Septiembre. Éstas canastas recaudaron muchísimo dinero el año pasado y estamos emocionados de ver la creatividad que cada clase tendrá éste año. Padres, vengan al gimnasio durante la Caminata y hagan una oferta. Todas las ganancias son para ayudar a nuestra escuela!
Boletos!
Los boletos cuestan $1 y se venden en línea en la página de PTO bajo la pestaña de Caminata (WAT). La mayoría de las actividades cuestan de 1 a 2 boletos y la mayoría de la comida de 2 a 5. Van a divertirse muchísimo participando en todas las actividades entre que caminan sus vueltas. Tendremos la oportunidad de pagar en efectivo antes de la Caminata.
Los boletos estarán en un brazalete para que los estudiantes no los pierdan. También podrás comprar Boletos de Ángel para los estudiantes que necesiten ayuda. También venderemos boletos adicionales el día de la Caminata, pero recomendamos altamente comprar con anticipación en línea para evitar largas filas en el puesto de boletos el día de la Caminata!
Comida!
Los boletos pueden utilizarse para comprar Chick-fil-A, pizza, nachos, palomitas, conos de nieve, algodón de azúcar, etc. No se necesita comprar comida con anticipación éste año!
Tendremos varios puestos de comida durante la Caminata para que los estudiantes y sus familias disfruten. Los estudiantes pueden comer en la cafetería o traer su comida de casa si eso prefieren. También tendremos estaciones de agua alrededor de la pista.
¿Qué deberá ponerse mi hijo?
Los estudiantes recibirán una playera GRATIS para la caminata que podrán ponerse en el evento (los maestros las entregarán la mañana de la Caminata). Los estudiantes deberán estar en ropa cómoda y tenis. Si hace calor, se recomienda bloqueador solar y una gorra. Si hace frío, por favor usen una playera de manga larga abajo de su playera de la Caminata y unos guantes.
¿Qué pasa si llueve o el clima está muy frío?
Trataremos de ajustar las actividades para tener la Caminata el mismo día. Si el clima no coopera, cambiaremos la Caminata al 1o de Noviembre.
